The construction of the River Clyde’s first opening road bridge has reached a significant milestone with the installation of state-of-the-art dolphins by Had Fab. These steel structures mark a crucial addition to the project, enhancing safety measures for boats navigating the river near the upcoming bridge.
Crafted over a five-month period by the skilled team at Had Fab, the dolphins were meticulously cut, welded, and assembled. Using massive 100-tonne cranes, the dolphins were carefully lifted into place at Westway in Renfrew, then transported by barge down the White Cart and onto the Clyde. These four dolphins, capable of supporting vessels up to 160 metres long, now stand ready at their designated spots.
Greg Scott, the Managing Director of Had Fab, expressed his delight at being entrusted with the fabrication and installation of the dolphin fenders for the innovative River Clyde bridge project. He emphasised the significance of this infrastructure for Renfrewshire, heralding it as a transformational construction that promises economic growth, a revitalised waterfront, and a redefined Glasgow City Region.
Part of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside initiative, this project is set to breathe new life into the area, linking Renfrew to Yoker through a modern bridge alongside improved road networks, cycling lanes, and footpaths. The development aims not only to bolster community connectivity but also to attract fresh opportunities, jobs, and investments to the riverfront, while offering enhanced accessibility to Scotland’s hub of manufacturing innovation, AMIDS.
Arriving in two segments during April and May, the bridge will undergo installation and commissioning on-site before being unveiled to the public later this year.
This landmark structure holds the promise of a brighter, more interconnected future for Renfrew, Yoker, and the entire Clyde waterfront region.
